Raising Money For The Hospitals

By jewelminer | December 13, 2011

It is that time of the year again - where your local hospital is raising funds to get new Howard Medical cpu cart, computers and other medical optional products they may need.   And although I don’t mind donating - I wonder why the hospital still need to raise so much funds because they are already charging a lot for consultation, staying in the hospital etc.  If they are really raising funds to buy better equipments for the patients than I have no qualms giving but if they are raising funds for partying - then I’m totally against it.  So instead of giving money - I prefer to check with the hospital’s spokesperson and find out what they need and are going to buy with the money.  I prefer to donate something useful like those medical carts, then I will gather some of my rich friends and get them to help me with the donations and buy the equipments for them/ for the patients to benefit the patients.

Angry Birds On PC

By jewelminer | November 28, 2011

Angry birds are so popular - I shouldn’t have been too surprise to see them on PC.  The wife wants to get something for her friend’s kid in Australia - so we took a look at books at Fishpond - where you can find books and toys with no charge for delivery.  We found this PC game on fishpond too - and decided to get this since any kids will know how to play this game.  But note that Fishpond may not have a delivery charge - they are quite slow - so if you are looking for a Christmas present - better order now.

Laptop Batteries Going Cheap

By jewelminer | October 20, 2011

Those looking for acer batteries now is the time for you to go get them  - because they are dirt cheap.  I always have a back up battery just in case one dies on me - on the road and I have no way to charge up.  But you and I know that laptop batteries are not cheap - so when I saw them going for $19.96 - I had to tell everyone right?  so if you have  a Travel mate - it’s time you get one, check them out at The Source but you must buy online only - pretty awesome deal - so don’t miss it.  With that kind of price i would grab a few and resell it if you have friends that has the same model of laptop.

Job Placement For High School

By jewelminer | October 7, 2011

Every year, we get calls from the local high school here - asking if they can place some students at our store - for job placement.  Most of these students aspire to do tech work or go into the IT profession - but they can’t make up their mind if they want to be a software programmer or an IT support technician.  But they do know that they are very interested in  Legacy System Programmer Jobs but not the exact field they want to be yet.

Therefore, the school’s counselors always tries to get them into a computer store or a place where they can work on web designing or repairing computers.  And since we do a little bit of web-designing, lots of computer sales and repairs  - it’s inevitable to get a few calls for students to be placed in our store for sort of internship during the entire year.   The school tries to bait us by telling us that these student comes as free labor and we can use them at whatever time we can and train them a long the way if we can.  And truth be told - we’ve done the mentoring part for a long time but not anymore.

Why?  because they usually turned out to be not as good nor honest - so it defeats the purpose of trying to teach them or spend time with them.  It’s like a school project and the mandatory to do the placement to graduate well.   And most of these kids have a very high expectation and with a store so small like ours - there is no way to train another person.  So nowadays, we politely refused to babysit anyone - well unless they pay us lots of money.  I would rather pick someone who is genuinely interested and pay them than some kid graduating from high school and thinks he is smarter than you.

Barcode Scanner For Small Businesses

By jewelminer | September 30, 2011

Many years ago - you don’t see many small businesses like ours having a barcode scanner - but now that they are so affordable - we are looking into getting 2 for our own business.  Honeywell Barcode Scanner was recommended by a fellow business friend and he had been using this one for a long time and they are very affordable now.   I loved that they are wireless and they have the best warranty amongst other Barcode brand names.   Coding initially will be tedious but after which - we don’t have to worry about staff pricing goods wrongly.  In the future - it will still save us a lot of money and it’s time to make our retail store look more professional.

Kid’s Friendly Laptop By Toshiba

By jewelminer | September 25, 2011

So I heard that this is going to be the latest kid’s friendly laptop and can within the wear and tear a kid can caused.  Perhaps they should make one that can within the abuse of an adult too eh.  For $498  - one can get this laptop for your kids at Best Buy.  But for $498 - one can get a cheaper one from Walmart - don’t you think?  I saw one from Walmart for $258 this week at Walmart.  So what is the difference between this Toshiba and the one in Walmart besides it’s price difference>

They said that this L735d is a makeover of the L635 but comes with several kid friendly features and software - they redesigned its case and it’s rather appealing the green in color truth be told.  Runs Window 7 as its OS - it has a webcam - most important to kids these days for video chatting and a huge hard drive at 320GB and an AMD processor.  Battery will last for 5.5 hrs so I was told but you and I know it rarely last more than an hour on constant use.  The screen is only at 13.3″  - so not really a big deal and like I said at that price I rather pay the $258 and I’ll make it kid friendly as easy.

Learning New Things

By jewelminer | August 12, 2011

Years ago - when I was working for someone else - I’ve never heard of document scanning services - but these days - even smaller companies like ours are being introduced to document scanning services.  Truth be told I learned about it thru’ my lawyer’s office - we had gone to sign some papers when we had bought our new house.  Seeing them make use of the document scanning services - everyone in the office and away from the office can retrieve documentation easily - and therefore even when his secretary wasn’t around - he didn’t have any trouble locating what he needed for us to sign.  So lately, we have been thinking of moving to a new store - and decided that we should look into some document scanning services - to eliminate all the hassle of losing documents and papers being filed away.  I think learning something new and becoming more efficient in the office is the way to go.  Wish us luck!

Inexpensive Romantic Weekend

By jewelminer | August 4, 2011

A cottage by the sea - for just the two of us this summer was what the spouse had asked - and it doesn’t need to be expensive she said.  She suggested looking for houses for rent on the internet and we can get away for a few days - and watch the sunrise in the morning and sunset in the evenings.  Curled up and watch a good movie - and have some quiet time together.   So you see a romantic weekend need not be expensive in Caribbeans - get yourself a few bottle of good wine - and find yourself a romantic cottage - and you are all set to make the spouse a very happy lady.

Cable Control

By jewelminer | July 13, 2011

Cables, cables, cables and wires, wires and more wires - complained the spouse - it was driving her nuts - and when things drive her nuts - she goes on and on about it.  I’m sure you know what i mean if you have a woman at home or work.  So for all my  digital video cables I’ve decided to do some cable control this week and went hunting for gadgets to either hide the cables - or sort them together - so that it doesn’t drive the spouse crazy.

There are many options to choose from - but I want one that is cheap and feasible and easy to use - so that the spouse can do her organizing herself.  I love the second option better - but they are from Denmark - and they are actually cable ID - but can be used as you can see as a cable controller.   Or you can use the cable Manager on the left for about $15USD.  So there - cable control is on its way.
